Wii Love Jesus

January 13, 2011

Maybe it’s just me, but I find it really difficult to take a church seriously when its name is: Austin Power House Church.

Not making that up. That’s really their name.

I wonder if there church slogan is “Groovy baby!”

Maybe their budget is “One….Hundred…..BILLION DOLLARS!”

Anyway, in their attempt to be “not your average church” they had the revolutionary idea of using pop culture to communicate…..well I’m not sure what they are trying to communicate. Apparently they love them some Super Mario Bros. (but hate copyright laws)

Looks like Vacation Bible School?

As an added bonus they left the Super Mario backdrop up for Sunday morning just to shake things up a bit.

I was hoping the name of the church was an unfortunate coincidence (like, they’re in Austin, TX, and they are the Power House Church of Texas.) This is worse. Nothing matches the creativity of Christians riffing on pop culture. The thing about comedies like Austin Powers – they don’t age all that well. If they don’t already, they’re going to feel really silly being stuck with that name ten years from now.

My guess was/is that they’re located in Austin, TX, but I spent a while searching on their website and for the life of me I can’t find an address.

I know there are plenty of Christian communities that are oblivious to pop culture, but surely there has to be at least one 20 or 30 something that has heard of the movie. Did they not stand up and say “hey guys, this name may not be the best idea”??

It’s never too late to tweak your church’s name. True story: My youth pastor friends and the Assembly of God church down the street told me that their on campus school had to change their merch and promotional gear as soon as the kids saw it. They were using their initials on everything: First Assembly of God School
